GURU NANAK OIL MILLS :

Pioneering Sustainability in Ugandan Shea Butter

Founded by renowned social entrepreneur and shea butter expert, Dr. Surjit Singh, GURU NANAK OIL MILLS is a beacon of sustainability in the heart of Uganda’s shea butter industry. Based in Lira, Northern Uganda, we are the first to explore the untapped potential of Ugandan shea butter (vitellaria nilotica), a rare and highly sought-after ingredient in the global cosmetics and skincare market.

While West African shea butter has long dominated the industry, Ugandan shea butter, with its unique properties, is gaining recognition for its exceptional quality. Our passionate and dedicated team is committed to bringing this hidden gem to the world, ensuring the highest standards of quality and sustainability at every step.

Sustainability and Social Impact at GURU NANAK OIL MILLS (GNOM)

Our Foundation: Ethical Sourcing and Fair Trade

GNOM’s business model is built on a commitment to ethical sourcing and fair trade practices. We prioritize the well-being of both people and the planet.

Environmental Impact: Biodiversity, Protection, and Value Addition

Our environmental impact model focuses on three key principles:

Biodiversity: We recognize the importance of preserving Uganda’s rich biodiversity, particularly the endangered Nilotica shea nut trees. By promoting sustainable harvesting and creating economic incentives for local communities, we ensure the long-term survival of this valuable species.

Environmental Protection: GNOM actively works to protect the environment by minimizing our ecological footprint and partnering with organizations like ECOCERT and the National Environment team to implement sustainable practices. We are proud to have received recognition from the Government of Uganda for our efforts in biodiversity conservation.

Value Addition: We believe in adding value at every stage, from sourcing to production. Our state-of-the-art technology allows us to produce high-quality shea butter while retaining its natural healing properties. We are committed to using only organic and sustainable methods, and our products are certified by ECOCERT, NOP-USDA, and the EU.

Exports and Global Reach

GNOM exports our premium shea butter to over 25 countries worldwide. Our dedication to quality and sustainability has earned us the prestigious President Export Awards twice in Uganda.

Corporate Social Responsibility

GNOM actively contributes to the community through various CSR initiatives:

Education: We believe that education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty. We provide scholarships and support to deserving students, particularly orphans and girls, empowering them to build a brighter future.

Community Welfare: We demonstrate our commitment to the community by providing 450 free meals every day to patients at the Lira Regional Referral Hospital since 2018.

Conclusion

At GNOM, we are more than just a shea butter producer. We are a catalyst for positive change, dedicated to ethical sourcing, environmental sustainability, and community empowerment.
